Suicide Prevention
A vision of healthy people, living in healthy communities.
The YOUTH SUICIDE
PREVENTION PROGRAM
is funded by Missouri Foundation for Health.

Each year, Regional Healthcare Foundation
provides the school-based
Signs of Suicide (SOS) prevention program
to over 1,500 middle school students in eight
Bootheel counties
(Butler, Dunklin, Mississippi, New Madrid,
Pemiscot, Ripley, Scott and Stoddard)
throughout the school year.

QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper training is
also provided to school personnel, teachers,
administrators and parents.

The goals of the program are to increase
awareness of the warning signs associated with
suicide and to reduce the stigma associated
with asking for help by providing resources and
referrals.

Teachers learn warning signs
of suicide

COLUMBIA, MO. — Del McMillen was asked
to tell her story at a teacher workshop to
face is of her smiling son, embossed on the
mousepad by her computer.

"Sometimes I turn it so I can see him, and
smile back," said McMillen, who brought the
pad to show the teachers. "On my bad
days, I turn it over."

McMillen's son, Dennis, survived a
childhood full of mood swings and angry
outbursts. But in 1999, at the age of 44, he
put a bullet through his heart. He left behind
letters to his wife, his three children, his
sisters and his mother, who still grieves at
the age of 75.
